“Nubian Dances No. 1 for Mixed Instruments” evokes ancient Sahelian traditions rooted along the Nile River. This cycle of four tone poems explores a broad spectrum of belief systems and communal rituals—beginning with the youthful exuberance of courtship in Nubian Dances No. 1 (commissioned by Chicago State University, with gratitude to the Center for Teaching and Research Excellence, for MAVerick Ensemble of Chicago). The work draws inspiration from a vivid mosaic of dance imagery, celebrating movement as a vessel for memory, identity, and cultural continuity.
