Description
“Fanfare” employs various bowing techniques — spicatto, col legno, sul ponticello and often exaggerated pizzicato — for the traditional string quartet to immediately become a surrogate for a multi-instrumental ensemble of loud horns, war-drums, dance steps, clanging machetes, and vocal ululation that characterize West African communal dances that have persisted among African-descent peoples in Cuba, Haiti and the Gullah traditions of the South Carolina coast. “Fanfare” is a major rhythmic workout, albeit, one that fine musicians will find worthwhile. It is a brief journey into a vast sanctum of intricate rhythms. It is a celebration of life; of a people’s accomplishments, and their hopes and aspirations for the future.
